Older Canadians deserve access to the best and newest vaccines
I am writing to you as a concerned Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) member in your riding to urge you to take action on a vital public health issue: adult vaccination. Many older Canadians are at risk of serious and preventable diseases, such as pneumococcal disease, respiratory syncytial virus, shingles, and others. These diseases can cause severe complications, such as death or hospitalization. Unfortunately, our current adult vaccination programs have not kept up with the latest technology. For instance, they are still using pneumococcal vaccines that were approved decades ago. Many older Canadians are also unaware of the existing vaccination programs and their benefits. This is why I am asking you to demand that our health minister: 1. Invest in the latest expert recommended adult vaccines. The government should increase public health investments to update adult vaccination programs with the latest approved and recommended vaccines, including those for pneumococcal infection diseases. 2. Undertake a broad public awareness campaign. The government should work with healthcare providers, community organizations, and media outlets to inform and educate older adults and their caregivers about the importance and availability of vaccines. By taking these steps, you will help protect the health and well-being of older Canadians, and save the health system money in the long run. Thank you for your attention and your action on this matter.
