However, provincial governments need to step up quickly and invest to make the latest pneumococcal vaccines available to all older Canadians. Unfortunately, provinces can drag their feet when it comes to updating adult vaccination programs.

I am writing to you as a concerned Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) member to urge you to take action on an important health issue: adult vaccination against pneumococcal disease.

This largely preventable disease, which includes pneumonia, can cause severe complications such as death or hospitalization, especially for older Canadians. In fact, in Canada, pneumonia and influenza are the eighth leading cause of death. Fortunately, vaccination can drastically reduce the risk of this disease.

However, your government needs to step up quickly and invest to make the latest pneumococcal vaccines available to all older Canadians. We shouldn’t drag our feet when it comes to updating adult vaccination programs and protecting vulnerable Canadians from these serious, yet preventable diseases.

For this reason, I am asking you to increase public health investments to update adult vaccination programs with the latest vaccines against pneumococcal disease.

In doing so, you will help protect the health and well-being of older Canadians, reduce the strain on our overburdened health systems, and save the health system money in the long run.
